Davis Cup Tournament is first played.
August 8, 1900
(& 8/9) The U.S. beats Britain 3-0 before 1,200 in the two-day tournament at the Longwood Cricket Club. Initially the International Lawn Tennis Challenge Trophy, the name of the tournament and trophy are soon renamed for Dwight Davis, a Harvard junior, who had proposed the match, captained the US team, and donated the 13-inch cup, made by Shreve Crump and Lowe. The British team wins only one of the 11 sets in this first tournament and complains about the poor conditions of the courts. The tournament is held in Brooklyn in 1902, and returns to Longwood in 1908, 1927, 1948, 1957, and 1959.
